This heavyweight double cloth wool fabric epitomizes Moorhouse & Brook’s renowned craftsmanship in coating fabrics: compact, full-bodied, and beautifully draped. Established in 1903 by F. L. Moorhouse and C. W. Brook, the business is now managed by the fourth generation, Alistair Ashworth Brook and his wife Nicola. They continue to offer many of the original signature Moorhouse & Brook fabrics, combining timeless design with exceptional heirloom quality.
A Fabric Rooted in British Craftsmanship and Close to Our Hearts
Our first partner as a fabric agent was Huddersfield Fine Worsteds, a leading British mill. At the time, its director, Alistair Brook, hired us to represent them in France after a brief but memorable factory visit in the middle of a snowstorm.
Several years later, Alistair decided to revive his family business, Moorhouse & Brook, known for its expertise in coating fabrics. Their fabrics are made in collaboration with a network of specialist spinners, weavers, and finishers across Yorkshire, ensuring superior quality and a low carbon footprint.
With its outstanding reputation, Alistair’s kindness, and his deep technical knowledge of wool, Moorhouse & Brook naturally became our ideal partner for developing our very own premium wool coating fabric.
The Heritage of This Town Coating
This 27oz (750-780g/ml) double cloth weave originates from the old H. Lesser coating bunch, which is no longer in circulation. It is woven using a lightweight yarn, combining the elegance of a fine diagonal twill with the dense, structured feel of a heavyweight coating fabric. This balance allows the cloth to retain its sharp silhouette without looking overly chunky. As one tailor described it, the fabric “holds the line” beautifully when tailored into a coat.
The Midnight navy shade is particularly sought after in classic menswear coats, being more refined than a standard navy. The shade is fiber-dyed, a process superior to piece-dyeing, ensuring greater depth and long-lasting colorfastness.
A Sustainable & High-Performance Fabric
This town coating has a low carbon footprint, as it is spun, woven, and finished within a 30km radius in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Its technical performance data, including seam strength, tear strength, and tensile strength, far exceeds minimum industry standards, ensuring exceptional durability. This cloth is not just for a season—it’s made to last, offering the wearer a coat with a long lifespan and even heirloom potential.
